Program Notes

A Duck in New York City, by acclaimed singer-songwriter Connie Kaldor, member of the Order of Canada, won the 2004 JUNO for Children's Album of the Year. Soon after Ms. Kaldor included these entertaining and clever songs, beautifully written and produced, as part of a children's book about a prairie duck who realizes his dream of doing his ducky dance on Broadway. Now this endearing story and Ms. Kaldor's catchy songs have found new form in an engaging symphonic show that introduces children to the orchestra by inviting them to sing and dance along. The vivid orchestrations complement the eclecticism of the songs' styles, from jazz and folk to reggae, tango and even hip-hop. Along the way children meet the different sections of the orchestra. Some unsung instruments achieve the spotlight (the tuba as a hippo); a newly-invented (and messy) one imitates a washing machine in the "Laundry Bag". All sound effects are acoustic, produced by the singers or musicians. At the heart of the show is the arranger Robert Rival's Yes, I Can!, an original musical telling of the show's title story.
